Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 6, 2020 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron, Iowa. There will be limited seating at the church; face masks and social distancing are required. Burial will follow at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Akron. Visitation with no family present will be from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 6, 2020 at Rexwinkel Funeral Home, 601 Torbert Blvd, in Akron.
Eugene 'Gene' Francis Welch was born on January 10, 1935 east of Westfield, Iowa to Francis and Lucille (Lowe) Welch. He was baptized at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Westfield and was confirmed at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron, Iowa. Gene attended May School Westfield Township District #6 from kindergarten until 5th grade. He then attended Westfield Consolidated from 6th-8th grade, Akron Public School from 9th-10th grade, and graduated from Westfield High School in 1953. Gene enlisted in the Iowa National Guard in 1953 and served as a cook. He was honorably discharged in 1961.
Gene was united in marriage to Marlene Osterbuhr on June 18, 1960 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron. Gene started farming east of Westfield. He also drove school bus and served two terms on the Westfield School board. In 1978, he took a job as a sales manager with Archer Petroleum in southeastern South Dakota. In 1984, he worked as a district sales manager for Red Grant Oil Company for South Dakota, northeast Nebraska, northwest Iowa, and southwest Minnesota. In 1985 he started Welch trucking and retired in 2003. He then traveled across the country with a special friend, Roana Ostrom; they spent a lot of time in New Mexico, traveled to Alaska in 2007, as well as visiting lakes in Minnesota.
Gene is survived by his sons: James (Cindy) Welch of Crofton, Nebraska and John (Shelly) Welch of Renner, South Dakota; grandchildren: Andrew, Alexander, Adam, and Owen; brother, Bernard Welch of Akron; special niece, Ella Woods; and several nieces and nephews.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marleen Osterbuhr; son, Joseph Welch; special friend, Roana Ostrom; and brother, Leonard (Lois) Welch.
