Anna "Barbara" Kruttschnitt was born in Wurtemberg, Germany in 1844. In 1855 her family emigrated to New Orleans, and subsequently sailed to California, crossing the Isthmus of Panama by rail. Her father, Johann Michael Kruttschnitt brought Anna and her mother Elisabeth to Weaverville, where his brother August had settled.

Anna Barbara attended the St. Catherine's Academy in Benicia. In 1863, she married Peter M. Paulsen, whom she met at one of the many German dances that were held at the time. She raised 10 children and lived the remainder of her life in a house on Court Street in Weaverville. The house is still standing.

She passed away at the home of her daughter Minnie Paulsen Hall, in Richmond CA. In addition to her living children, Elizabeth, Minnie, Anna, Albert, Edna and Arthur, she was survived by two half-brothers, Gustave and John Kruttschnitt of Essex County, New Jersey. She was predeceased by her children Paulina, Julius, Harry and Peter, her mother Elisabeth Whipplinger Kruttschnitt of Weaverville and father Johann Michael Kruttschnitt of Newark, New Jersey.
