Rex Perry Barker, age 84, passed away in Brigham City, Utah on Tuesday, September 7, 2004. He was born on November 22, 1919 on the family farm in East Bear River City, Utah to Orson Lorenzo and Eliza Melinda Merrell Barker. He attended school at Bear River City schools and graduated from Box Elder High School in Brigham City in 1938. Rex married his sweetheart of 63 years, Grace Olsen in the Logan Temple in 1941. Together they raised three sons, Gary (deceased), and twins Bruce and Brent. Rex worked as a farmer in Corinne until 1966 when the family moved to Brigham City. He also worked at Merrell Lumber and Box Elder School District. Rex was an active member of the LDS Church, serving as Ward Clerk, Elders Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader and Home Teacher, etc. He and his wife were in charge of the 9th Ward Soup Kitchen for four years. Rex and family enjoyed camping, traveling, fishing and spending time together. Rex leaves behind a heritage of three sons, ten grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren who loved him dearly. He is survived by his wife, Grace of Brigham City, Utah; twin sons, Bruce (Debra) Barker, Cedar City, Utah and Brent (Corinne) Barker of Rexburg, Idaho; Leslie "Cookie" Barker, a daughter-in-law of Layton, Utah and a special niece Janet (Bill) Heumann of Sandy, Utah. Also survived by two brothers, DeVerl Barker of Bear River City, Utah; Roland Barker of Perry, Utah. Rex was preceded in death by his parents, son Gary O. Barker, a twin brother Ray, two other brothers and one sister. The family would like to thank all who have helped care for Rex in any way and a special thanks to John Markeson MD for his kindness and help. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Box Elder Stake Center, 420 South 800 West, Brigham City, Utah. Family will greet friends on Friday, September 10, 2004 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Gillies Funeral Chapel, 634 East 200 South, Brigham City and on Saturday at the Box Elder Stake Center from 10:00 to 10:40 a.m. Please take 700 South and go to 800 West to go to the church to avoid Peach Days Parade. Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery.
