CHATFIELD -- A memorial service for George Herman Baier, 81, of Chatfield, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chatfield Lutheran Church with the Rev. Christine Finsand officiating. Burial will be in the Chatfield Cemetery. The American Legion will provide military honors.
Mr. Baier died Friday (Aug. 31, 2007) at his home, where he lived for 50 years, after a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 18, 1926, in Jordan Township in Fillmore County. He graduated from Chatfield High School in 1944. He married Marjorie Schmidt on June 8, 1950, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wykoff. He served in the Army from 1954 until 1956 in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He worked for IBM in shipping and receiving for 30 years.
He was a member of Chatfield Lutheran Church, Elks Lodge 1091, American Legion, and IBM Quarter Century Club. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, yard work and being outdoors.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Stephen (Beth) Baier of Rochester; two grandchildren, Adam Paul Baier of Rochester, Katie Jo Baier of Burnsville, Minn.; and two sisters, Maxine Metzger of Chatfield and Gloria (Russell) Williams of Rochester. Preceded in death by a brother.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Riley Funeral Home in Chatfield and an hour before the service Wednesday at the church.
