The M. K. Donovan home is bowed in sorrow over the death of their son, Joseph, who met his death while at work at Thebs, Ill., Sunday afternoon. He was the employ of Kelly and Atkinson, a firm of contractors, and while at work upon a bridge, which they were erecting across the Mississippi river at that place, he was in some manner accidently struck by a heavy beam and knocked into the waters below. The blow was of sufficient force to stun him and he met his death by drowning.

As we go to press the family have received no word of the recovery of the body. Mr. Donovan departed Monday afternoon for Thebs in order to be at the scene of the accident. The entire community joins in offering the family their deepest sympathy during their period of sorrow.

Mayor Donovan and son, M. D. returned Sunday from their sad trip to Missouri. All effort to recover the body of the son and brother was fruitless. He fell about 170 feet to the water which was over seventy feet deep with the current of about four miles per hour. They were given every possible assistance by the citizens, but without result. The entire family has the sincere sympathy of the entire community in this sad affliction.

Joe was twenty-seven years of age, a good boy, and well-liked by all who knew him.

Louis Donovan arrived home from Madison, Wis., University last week called by the death of his brother Joseph.

Ackley World – Mike Donovan of Eagle Grove, who visited here, states that the family has no hope of recovering the body of Joseph Donovan, who fell from a bridge and was drowned in the Mississippi river above Cairo, Illinois.

Since the work of building the bridge was begun six men have lost their lives on it, by falling and drowning. At that point the water is said to be sixty feet deep. An iron weighting several tons fell at the same time.
