Marina Durand Nelson, 87, of the town of Scott, died on Monday, April 8, 2002, at Spooner Health System.

She was born on Dec. 7, 1914, to Harry and Sophia (Engelhart) Meyer in St. Bonifacius, Minn. In 1919 her family moved to Round Lake near Frederic, where they farmed. On Oct. 31, 1934, she married Peter Andrew Durand at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Webster. They farmed in the town of Scott, and she cooked at the 5 Lakes Club on Oak Lake and later at the Topper Cafe in Spooner.

Peter died on Dec. 3, 1970. On May 5, 1980, she married Leonard Nelson. He preceded her in death in April 1988. (Not sure but Leonard may be Findagrave # 36851753. If somebody knows for sure please let me know and I will add a family link.)

She was an active member of Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary Catholic Church in the town of Scott and the Catholic Council of Women.

She is survived by six children, Harry (Karla) Durand of Shell Lake, Margie Correll, Donald (Norma Kay) Durand, and Deloris Durand, all of the town of Scott, Bernard (Marlys) Durand of Buffalo, Minn., and Tony (Karen) Durand of Altoona; 26 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille (Edward) Durand of Spooner and Mary Marquardt of Fond du Lac; four brothers, Harry (Edith) Meyer of St. Croix Falls, Willard (Bev) Meyer and Ervin (Mary Jane) Meyer, both of Grantsburg, and Jim (Margaret) Meyer of Chatfield, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

In addition to her parents and two husbands, she was preceded in death by a grandson, David Durand, two brothers, and a sister.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 11, at Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary Catholic Church in the town of Scott. Fr. Bill Murphy will be celebrant. Interment will follow in Sacred Hearts Cemetery, town of Scott.

Casket bearers will be Rick Correll and Dale, Dana, David, Jason, and Peter Durand. Honorary bearers will be Randy Correll and Brad, Darren, Josh, and Trevor Durand.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Scalzo Funeral Home, Spooner, and for one hour prior to the Mass on Thursday. A 7:30 p.m. vigil service will be held on Wednesday at the funeral home.
