Lydia Elizabeth Schleining was born in Ft. Morgan, Colorado in 1925 and lived in Thornton, Colorado until she passed on August 1st just before her 95th birthday.

She is survived by her sister Helen Ball, her two daughters, Karan Haber of Thornton, Colorado and Brenda Hartmann of Westminster, Colorado and her ornery son-in-law Tim Hartmann, grandson Tim Hartmann, granddaughter Nikole Tucker, granddaughter-in-law Rochelle Tucker, and two great granddaughters, Hallie and Huntleigh. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 40 years, Dave Schleining, her parents Henry and Lydia Kembell and her siblings Olga, Katherine, Edith, Mary, Esther, Hannah, Eddie, and Martha. She considered herself blessed by a large extended family. She loved each one, memorizing their birthday to call them.

She never stopped loving an evening of dancing with her siblings or annual vacations in the family station wagon, always finding a way to gracefully put faith and family first in her life choices. In 1955, Dave and Lydia purchased their first home, a newly built red brick ranch in Thornton, Colorado where they remained until Dave passed in 1983 and Lydia passed in 2020.

As a professional mom, if Lydia was not baking cookies and Christmas candy for her daughters’ school parties or chauffeuring them to events, then she was busy serving in charity work, teaching at church, or tracking the bowling league fees for her weekly teams.

Until recently, you could find her keeping score for one of her bridge groups, where she developed a life-long love for cookies and candy. She never met a stranger, striking up a friendly conversation with anyone who made eye contact. And she never declined an invitation for ice cream, which she enjoyed last week.

She was beloved by all she met and will always be endeared by the girls she adopted, lovingly raised, and spoiled rotten. Her happy life will be celebrated at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary, 6601 South Colorado Blvd, Centennial, CO 80121 with a short graveside service on Friday, August 7th at 11:00 AM. Please join the family following the service at their home.
