Gesche Margarethe Otken immigrated to Texas with her parents and five siblings. They departed from Bremen in October 1847 aboard the ship Helen and Elise and arrived in Galveston in December. 1850 census records place the family in Colorado County, engaged in farming. The family later moved to Fayette County. Gesche Margarethe was known as Meta, a diminutive form of Margarethe. The original spelling of Otken was modified to Oetken. Meta married Martin Dippel on 9 September 1855 in Round Top, Fayette County. Five children, 4 boys and 2 girls, were born in Fayette County to their union. Meta died five days after the birth of their youngest child, presumably from complications of childbirth.
