David was the second of eight children born to David and Elizabeth (Swartz) Sr. His siblings were: Abraham, Maria Polly, Catherine, Frances, Elizabeth, Christina, and Hannah Zehner.

David married Priscilla Leiby, daughter of George and Polly (Zeigler) Leiby in December of 1845 in Richland County, Ohio.
