Helen Scharfe, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, went to be with her Savior Saturday, December 14.

A longtime resident of Austin, Helen was born in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, December 25, 1917 to Frank W and Marie Cocek Urbis. She was raised in Taylor, where her parents were the owners of the Urbis Cotton Gin. For the past five years she has resided at the Clairmont Retirement Center, and will be missed by her many friends.

A graduate of Taylor High School and the Austin Beauty School, Helen married Emil F. Scharfe October 26, 1937. His work took them to California, Oregon, and Washington DC. They settled in Austin after he began working for Southern Pacific Railroad. Helen's family was her career. She was an accomplished seamstress and an avid gardener. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Dennis F. Scharfe, one granddaughter, Monica Bailes, one brother, Frank Urbis, Jr. and one sister, Leona Urbis.

Survivors include: daughter Priscilla and her husband Bob DuBois of Lockhart, daughter-in-law Mildred Scharfe of Austin, son Ron Scharfe and his wife Alice of Austin, and daughter Yvonne and her husband Dr. Joseph Bailes of The Woodlands. Her sister Olivia and her husband Alton Lucas of Portland, Oregon, and a number of nephews and nieces also survive.

She will be sadly missed by her 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Helen was a member of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church.

Rosary will be recited Tuesday, 7:00 pm at Providence Funeral Home Chapel in Taylor. Celebration of Mass will be at 2:00 pm Wednesday, December 18 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Msgr. Lonnie Urban as Celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Taylor.
