JACOB CHARLES SCHNOOR SR., born Oct. 15, 1925, of MIDDLETOWN, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 25, with his beloved wife of 60 years, Joyce Merritt Schnoor at his side. Jake was a lifelong resident of Middletown. He grew up in the Belford section of the township and moved to his present home on Hamiltonian Drive in 1953. He was a graduate of Middletown High School class of 1942. After graduating, he entered the Navy, serving in the Atlantic Theater of World War II. He was assigned to various Carrier Aircraft Service Units at Naval Air Stations in Wildwood, Atlantic City, and Quonset Point, Rhode Island. He received an honorable discharge as an Aviation Ordnanceman Second Class in 1946. From the time he was a young boy, he worked as a commercial fisherman in the family business, Schnoor Brothers started by his grandfather, Jacob, when he came to the United States from Germany. When he retired from the fishing industry, he went to work for William A. Fluhr of Little Silver and then Lawes Fuel Oil Companies in Shrewsbury. The people that he serviced when he delivered fuel oil for these companies looked forward to their deliveries and a chance to talk to "Jake." Jake was a great conversationalist and always took the time to get to know the people he encountered. He possessed a genuine warmth and sincerity that endeared him to everyone he met. He was one of the first members of the Middletown Township Conservation Commission, as well as one of the original members of the Mater Dei Booster Club. He was also a member of the Belford Independent Fire Company. Over the years, he enjoyed bowling on various teams in the men's league at Middletown Lanes, playing poker, pinochle and bridge with friends, spending the summer months at Ship Ahoy Beach Club in Sea Bright, attending matinees at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, and going on trips and outings with the Nifty Fifties of Fair Haven in his leisure time. Jake was an avid sports enthusiast, his favorite professional teams were the New York Yankees and the New York Giants. The teams closest to his heart though were the ones that he supported as he cheered on his children and grandchildren. "Grampi" and his unconditional love and support will be missed on the sidelines. For most of his life, he was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church, New Monmouth. He became a member of St. James's Parish in Red Bank when his grandsons became altar servers there, and he began to go to Mass there so that he could share the liturgy with his family.

Jake was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Ella Schnoor; and his sister, Doris Schnoor. Besides his wife, Joyce, he is survived by his children, Judy and Paul Hencoski of Middletown, Tim and Linda Schnoor of Springfield, Va., and Jay and Nadine Schnoor of Middletown. He was beloved "Grampi" to Paul and Juli Hencoski of Sayreville, Carla and Michael Galdo of MacLean, Va., Joy and Stewart Newcomb of Old Bridge, Christina Schnoor of Springfield, Va., and Will, Kevin, Jeffrey, and Annemarie Schnoor of Middletown. He was also "Grampi" to his two great-grandchildren, Ella Rose Hencoski and Gabriel Michael Galdo.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown. The funeral will be at 9:15 a.m. Saturday from the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. James R.C. Church, Red Bank. Internment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Donations can be made in Jake's name to "The Barn for the Poorest of the Poor," 26 Leonardville Road, New Monmouth, NJ 07748.
