Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, he began his career in business. He later studied the history of art, and obtained a Ph.D from the University of Frankfurt when he was almost 50. He came to the United States in 1937 and became assistant curator of the Cleveland Museum of Art and taught at Western Reserve University. In 1945, he joined the staff of The Staats-Zeitung and Herold, a German language newspaper, for which he worked 21 years, writing about art and life in New York. He retired in 1965.
