Hastin moved with his family in the late 1830s to Devers Cove, Big Coon Valley, Jackson County. After his father passed away, he along with his first wife, two brothers and mother can be found in the 1850 census in Cherokee County, Alabama. They moved back to Jackson County and homesteaded 160 acres of land on the upper slopes of Crow Mountain with about 40 of these acres being on top of the Cumberland Plateau, being located at the Slipoff Hollow. ( the NE 1/4 of Section 17, T 2 S, R 7 E, homestead # 874) Hastin and his second wife Caroline Bruce were married by local community member David Tate, Judge of Probate, in 1874 at the foot of the mountain in Matthews Cove at the residence of Luvina Matthews. They were found living here on their property in 1880 with 12 of their children. By 1900, Hastin and Caroline were living in a rental house farming listed with a Hollywood address. Hastin is not found in the 1910 census and is believe to have passed away between the summer of 1900 and the death of wife Caroline in April of 1909
