Thomas lived adjacent to the cemetery as he purchased 80 acres of the William Rash farm from Williams' son Wesley Rash in March, 1866 (Deed book H page 157). Thomas also patented the SE 1/4 of Section 35, T1S, R6E in 1855 which contains the land around the Cave Spring Church and valley farm land. When his estate was settled, it is noted he owned 359 acres of property. A small note in the Huntsville Advocate in Aug, 1873 noted Thomas Carlton passing away near Stevenson. His first wife was Elizabeth Land (daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth Land) of Boomer, NC. They were the parents of 4 children before she died around 1831, possible in Ala or possible on the move to Jackson County. Second wife was Sarah A "Sallie" Holder ( daughter of Thomas B Holder). Thomas and Sallie were the parents of 6 children. Thomas Carlton was the son of Judge John Carlton and Elizabeth Barlow Carlton
