The oldest of the 10 children born to of Henry Steven and Kathryn (Kappenman) Kotz. Marie, like her next sibling Celia, was born in Dolton, shortly after Henry and Kathryn bought a farm near Presho, Lyman, County and the rest of the family was born there. Marie remained at home but between the 1920 and 1930 census became ill and was sent to live at the State Hospital in Utica.
