President of Costa Rica. He served as president on two separate occasions. First, from 10 August 1870 to 8 May 1876 and second from 11 September 1877 to 6 July 1882. Prior to serving as president, he began his military career in 1850 and distinguished himself in the national campaign against the American William Walker. Fighting in other campaigns, he was son promoted to commander, colonel, and then general. On 27 April 1870 he was one of a group of army officers who perpetrated a coup d'etat and deposing President Jesús Jiménez. In a few months he replaced conspirator Bruno Carranza as president. He is best remembered for enacting Costa Rica's 1871 Constitution which remained in force until 1948. During his second term he abolished the death penalty. He also founded the Union Bank, now Bank of Costa Rica in 1877 and greatly increased the number of schools and colleges.
