Doris Marie Kolmos (nee Recknagel) passed away on Oct 19, at Fort Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Doris was born on June 30, 1916, in Elkhorn, Wis., the daughter of Henry and Emma Recknagel. She graduated from Elkhorn High School in 1933 and from the then Racine-Kenosha Rural Normal School, Union Grove, Wis., in 1939. While at normal school, Doris met her future husband. She also attended classes at Whitewater State Teachers' College and the University of Colorado at Boulder. She married Alfred S. Kolmos at St. John's Lutheran Church, Elkhorn, Wis., on Aug. 18, 1945. For the next 62 years, they were virtually inseparable, traveling the world together and enjoying a marriage sustained by mutual love. From 1939 to 1946, Doris taught in rural one-room schools in Walworth County. She was a member of First English Lutheran Church, Whitewater, since 1965 and through the years was active in many capacities there including volunteer work at that church's thrift shop. She served as curator at the Depot Museum, Whitewater, for over 20 years, frequently penning a newspaper column entitled "The Spider's Web." Her creativity was evident not only in her writing, but also in her artistic abilities. She considered herself a "kind of" Grandma Moses, teaching basic watercolor and oil painting at Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois and at Whitewater. Doris will be long-remembered by her many friends for her thoughtfulness and enthusiasm. She dearly loved her family, her community, her country, and, above all, her God. Doris was preceded in death by her parents and step-mother, Mabel. She is survived by her husband; one daughter, K. Alicia (Douglas) Greve of Charlotte, N.C. and one son, Kit (Charmane) Kolmos of Williams Bay, Wis.; five grandchildren, Christian and Jessen Kolmos and Christian, Emma and Peter (Dominique) Greve; one great-grandson, Kyle Chase Greve; one brother, Kenneth (Esther) Recknagel of Mahwah, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Skindingrude Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Hazel Ridge Cemetery in Elkhorn, Wis. A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 23, at First English Lutheran Church, Whitewater. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, Elkhorn, or to First English Lutheran Church for the maintenance of Heart Prairie Lutheran Church, Whitewater Lake. The Skindingsrude Funeral Home is assisting the family.
