Arnold Joel Sather

Jan. 16, 1916 -- Feb. 23, 2006

Second-generation Port Townsend resident Arnold Joel Sather died of pneumonia at age 90.
The son of Floyd and Caroline Amelia (Molden) Sather was born in Port Townsend.
He graduated from Port Townsend High School in 1934, then worked for Glendale Dairy, which was owned and operated by his father.
As a corporal with the Army's 7th Infantry Division during World War II, he was a part of major landings on the islands of Attu, Leyte, Kwajalein and Okinawa in the Pacific Theater.
Mr. Sather was awarded the Bronze Star for exemplary conduct in ground combat, and the Purple Heart for wounds received when he was blown from his Jeep.
After the war, he worked for Harper Oil Co. as a marketer, providing local tankwagon delivery service for 37 years before retiring in 1983.
Mr. Sather attended Grace Lutheran Church, where he participated in both its construction and maintenance.
He was also a volunteer fireman as well as a life member of the Port Townsend Elks Lodge, and treasurer during the founding years of Little League Football in Jefferson County.
In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. After retirement, he frequented area coffee shops to keep in touch with local news.
Mr. Sather married Myrtle Mary Luck in 1946. She died in 1973.
Survivors include his wife, the former Rachel C. Chavez; sons and daughters-in-law Norman Floyd and Linda Sather of Tacoma, and David Arnold and Jeanie Sather and Arnold Joel "Arne" and Michele Sather Jr., all of Port Townsend; sister Clarice Call of Tacoma; 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Also surviving are stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law Ray and Nikki Merritt and Doug and Natasha Merritt, all of Sacramento, Calif., and Jim and Sally Merritt of Seattle; stepdaughter and stepson-in-law Ruby and Jerry Brazelton of Portland, Ore.; and stepdaughter Michelle Gravatt of Yakima.
Services: March 10, 1 p.m., funeral in Grace Lutheran Church, 1120 Walker St., Port Townsend; followed by graveside service in Laurel Grove Cemetery; and a memorial reception at 3 p.m. in the Elks Lodge, 555 Otto St., Port Townsend. The Rev. Howard A. Fosser will officiate.
Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.
