PLAINFIELD -- Police would not say whether Javier Barrios' ex-girlfriend had deadly intentions when she and another man met him behind a Plainfield gas station Sunday afternoon. But the meeting ended with Barrios dying in a nearby field, shot multiple times.

Barrios, 18, of 1694 Fiddyment Drive in Romeoville, was shot to death Sunday behind a gas station near 135th Street and Illinois 59. On Monday, Plainfield police arrested Gabriela Escutia, 18, of 2706 Snowmass Court in Joliet, and Ricardo Gutierrez, 18, of Chicago, in connection with the crime. Each faces one count of first-degree murder.

Earlier this month, Escutia obtained an order of protection against Barrios, a record that led police to her during their overnight investigation, said Police Chief Don Bennett. He did not know whether Barrios knew Gutierrez, who was described as Escutia's boyfriend.
About 4:40 p.m. Sunday, police were called about shots fired in a parking lot behind the gas station.
Witnesses said they heard the shots, saw a man stagger into a field south of the station and collapse, and watched his assailants drive away. Barrios was pronounced dead at the scene. Bennett would not elaborate on Barrios' wounds, nor would he say who allegedly shot him.
A boy who answered the door at the Barrios' home Monday declined to comment, and said Barrios' parents wanted to be left alone. A troubled life Escutia, a 2007 graduate of Plainfield South High School, filed the order of protection against Barrios, who previously attended Plainfield Academy, on Oct. 11. The order prohibited Barrios from going to her home and Joliet Junior College's North campus while Escutia was there. Joliet Police Chief Fred Hayes said Escutia filed one domestic violence report, on Oct. 6. She told police Barrios came to her house to pick up his BB gun and started an argument about money, pushed her down and vandalized her car. She said he also harassed her with phone calls, according to court records.

On Sept. 27, Barrios allegedly tried pushing Escutia down some stairs and shot at her car with a BB gun, court records say. Barrios had a troubled final winter at alternate school Plainfield Academy. He was arrested in January for engaging "in a verbal altercation with a Plainfield Academy staff member in the hallway" and then again in February after he "punched his own hand repeatedly and stating, 'Just one good hit,'" while looking at a teacher, according to court papers.
Barrios pleaded guilty to both charges.

$5 million bond set for 2 teens

Two teenagers accused of killing a Romeoville teen received multimillion dollar bonds Tuesday.

Javier A. Barrios, 18, of 1694 Fiddyment Drive in Romeoville, was fatally shot Sunday afternoon behind a gas station near 135th Street and Illinois 59 in Plainfield.

On Tuesday, Will County Circuit Court Judge Robert Lorz set bond at $5 million each for Gabriela Escutia, 18, of 2706 Snowmass Court in Joliet, and Ricardo Gutierrez, 18, of Chicago, who each face one count of first-degree murder in connection with the case.

Witnesses told police they heard gunshots about 4:40 p.m. Sunday, saw Javier stagger into a field south of the gas station and collapse, and watched his assailants drive away.

Plainfield police arrested the couple Monday at Gutierrez's mother's house in Chicago.

The courtroom Tuesday was filled for Escutia and Gutierrez's bond hearing. Several attendees wore matching white T-shirts airbrushed with Javier's picture and "You'll always be missed."

When Escutia and Gutierrez appeared on a monitor via video feed from the jail for the hearing, some audience members clapped, some cried. One woman spread a T-shirt on the back of the seat in front of her so she could look at the picture of Javier.

Meeting arranged

Javier met Escutia about two months ago at Westfield Louis Joliet mall, where she worked, said Barrios' aunt Gabriela Barrios, of Oswego. Escutia told Javier she had an eight-month-old baby and was in financial trouble, his aunt said. Javier fell in love with her and wanted to help her.

Gabriela Barrios said she heard Escutia also told Javier she was pregnant with Gutierrez's child -- a fact disputed by police, who believe Escutia only told Javier she was pregnant so he would leave her alone.

Javier's uncle, Javier Barrios of Berwyn, said family members heard that Escutia called Javier on Sunday, asked him to go to a movie with her and told him to meet her in the parking lot near the gas station.

When Javier arrived, his aunt said, Gutierrez shot him. Police would not confirm the story, but said they believe the three had arranged to meet there.

Escutia, a 2007 graduate of Plainfield South High School, filed an order of protection Oct. 11 against Javier, who attended Plainfield Academy.

The order, which alleged Javier was physically abusive and vandalized Escutia's car, prohibited him from going to her home and Joliet Junior College's North campus while she was there.

They were scheduled to appear in court on the order Thursday.

"(Javier) was not an angel, but he didn't deserve to be done this way," his uncle said, standing in the hallway outside the courtroom after the hearing. "Teenagers killing teenagers. I hope both of them are regretting what they did."

Escutia and Gutierrez are scheduled to appear in court Nov. 27.

UPDATE: Ricardo Gutierrez was sentenced to 68 years in prison and has a projected parole date of 10/29/2075.

Gabriela Escutia was sentenced to 52 years in prison and has a projected parole date of 10/27/2059.
