Dr. John P. Marty, 84, of Madison, Miss., formerly of Springfield, died Sunday, July 11, 2004, at St. Catherine's Village in Madison.


He was born July 2, 1920, in Pana, the son of Charles Joseph and Marie Wiss Marty.


He married Elaine Miller; she preceded him in death.


He married Elizabeth Johnson in 1965.


A son, Gregory T. Marty, preceded him in death.


Dr. Marty graduated from St. Theresa High School in Decatur, earned a bachelor of science at St. Joseph College in Rensselaer, Ind. in 1941, attended Loyola University Medical School in Chicago, interned at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Treasure Island, Calif., and served his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at St. Louis University. He worked in general practice in Decatur and Argenta, and in obstetrics and gynecology in Springfield, retiring in 1985.


He served as chairman of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at St. John's Hospital and worked as a clinical professor at SIU School of Medicine.


He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a medical officer on the USS Brinkley and the USS Panamint; and of the Korean War, serving at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Philadelphia.


Survivors: wife, Elizabeth Johnson-Marty; seven daughters, Kathy (husband, John) Albers of Germantown, Tenn., Elaine (husband, Richard) Ross of Ballwin, Mo., Anne (husband, David) Haire of Hamilton, Ohio, Yvonne Marty of Lenoir, N.C., Hallye "Sissy" (husband, Gregory) Kuhlman of Fort Myers, Fla., Madonna (husband, Bruce) Lauer of Springfield and Khrysta Marty of Encinitas, Calif.; four sons, John Peter Marty of Hampton, Va., Charles Joseph (wife, Lelanni) Marty of Oceanside, Calif., Paul (wife, Linda) Marty of Springfield and Timothy (wife, Maye) Marty of Pasadena, Calif.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Agnes Eldon-Maxon of Elmhurst, Gertrude (husband, Corwin) Cary of Madison, Miss., and Mickie Knoblich of Atlanta, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.


Memorial Mass at Christ the King Church, Monsignor David S. Lantz officiating.


Burial in Calvary Cemetery.
