Nicaraguan Statesman. He served as the President of Nicaragua from January 10, 2002 to January 10, 2007. He received his education in the United States, graduating with a bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering from Saint Louis University in 1962. In 1952, he started his own agro-production company and later became a successful businessman. During the 1980s, he opposed the Sandinista government of Daniel Ortega. In late 1995, he was chosen by the PLC (Liberal Constitutionalist Party) to run on their presidential ticket as vice president under Arnoldo Aleman in the 1996 general election. The PLC ticket defeated Ortega's Sandnistas and he became vice-president. He served in this position until October of 2000, when he resigned to run for the presidency. In 2001, he was chosen to run by the PLC as their presidential candidate and was successful in the general election against the Sandnistas that year. He served as president for the next five years until turning over the office to his old political nemesis Daniel Ortega in 2007. After leaving office, he left the political arena and ran a non-profit educational foundation.
