Barbara Olson
September 29, 1925 ~ June 22, 2021 (age 95)

Barbara Janet (Allen) Olson passed away peacefully at Bay Bluffs care facility. In her final days she was surrounded by her loving family.

Barbara was born at home in Lexington Kentucky on September 29, 1925 to Professor William Ray Allen, and Lura Belle Allen. She attended elementary school at Jefferson Davis, and graduated from Henry Clay High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology at the University of Kentucky, then did her internship at the Lexington Clinic. There she qualified as Registered Medical Technologist, ASCP. Her first job was at Sweets Pathology Laboratory in Lexington. "Barb" joined the US Air Force in '49 and was stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio where she met optometrist Dr. Robert Olson, also stationed there. They were married in Lexington at the same house where she was born. They were transferred to S. Ruislip, England and stayed there from '54 to '57. They decided to settle in Petoskey where "Bob" set up his practice. They soon had two boys so Barb was a stay at home mother for a number of years. During that time they became friends with countless people in the area, and did a lot of sailing, gardening, hunting and fishing. Barb was involved with many school functions including PTA and the Petoskey Schools Development Committee. She went back to work as head of Hematology at Burns Clinic in '73 until she retired in '90. She loved to travel and made many trips to Europe, most of them with her sister and best friend Ellen. She loved and was loved by everyone she met.

Barb was preceded in death by her older sister Martha Jane Jackson. She is survived by her younger sister Ellen Claire Allen of Lexington; sons Jeff (Lynnette) Olson of Petoskey, MI. and David (Jennifer Scott) Olson of Ft. Eustis, VA.; granddaughters Katelyn (Dustin) Schoenith of Kalkaska, Lauren (Brett) Brinkel of Petoskey, Samantha (Tom) Glide of Ft. Eustis, and grandson Trevor (Meghan Senglaub) Olson of Boyne City, MI. Great grandchildren include Ella Schoenith, Sawyer Clute-Senglaub, Aiden, Keeley, Remmy and Theo Glide.

Her family will celebrate her life at Stone Funeral Home on Friday, August 6th at 10am followed by a luncheon at Staffords Bay View Inn. Anyone wishing to donate in her name can do so to the McLaren Hiland Cottage Hospice House or any other local organization.
