He married his first wife, Nora Wettwer, in Korna, a Bohemian settlement southeast of River Falls, Wisconsin. Korna was called Cherma in English.

According to the History of the Town of River Falls, the Bohemians "formed the Catholic congregation of St. Martins in 1892 and built their church soon after."
