Helen McRoy Delaware passed away peacefully on July 20, 2015 in Sarasota, Florida.
She was born on October 12, 1920 in Meridian, Mississippi where her father was editor of the Meridian Times newspaper. After high school, she attended community college and later worked in the Meridian offices of the Army Air Force where she met Bob Delaware. They married in 1945 and moved to Chicago; eventually moving to Barrington, Illinois where they raised their family. Helen was an avid golfer and bridge player with a wide circle of friends at Biltmore Country Club where she and Bob were members for many years. She was active in the Children's Aid Society and the Auxiliary for the Home for Boys. She was a supporter of the Sarah Siddons Society. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She found time to develop a successful real estate career in Barrington while raising three sons. The Delawares established a second home on Anna Maria Island, Florida in 1977. Sarasota became Helen's full time residence when Bob passed away in 1985. Always involved in her community, she was supportive of the Asolo Theater, the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center and SPARCC (the Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center) and the Palm Aire Country Club. Helen moved from Anna Maria Island to the community of Palm Aire and enjoyed entertaining, bridge and her many golf friends. She was a member of the Palm Aire Country Club for over 30 years where she developed many lasting friendships on and off the golf course. Ever ready to travel, some of her favorite memories were of cruises taken and countries visited. She loved to send handwritten notes to family and friends to keep in touch.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; brothers William and Clifton; and sisters Bessie, Pauline and Margaret.
She is survived by her brother Wallace, sons Robert (Suzanne), Paul (Mila), and Wayne (Angela) and grandsons Robert IV and Paul Jr. and great-grandson, Brantley.
At her request, no services were held. Donations may be sent to SPARCC Treasure Chest, 1426 Fruitville Road, Sarasota, Florida 34236.
