Typhoid fever does not discriminate against its victims and can strike anytime. Tragically, Eight-year-old George and his twenty-four-year-old brother Bernard succumbed to typhoid fever twenty-two years apart.

Their parents were early settlers of the area, Henry Knoeber, Sr., and Mary Taphorn Knoeber, arriving in 1879. The family homesteaded three-and-a-half miles south of Spearville. As the closest Catholic Church and school were in Windthorst, the Knoeber family attended both.

George was the first of the family to be born in Ford County on July 10, 1880, and passed away on September 14, 1888. He was laid to rest in Holy Cross Cemetery in Windthorst.

Bernard was also born in Ford County on April 3, 1886. He grew up on the family farm. Unfortunately, Bernard died on October 21, 1910. He shares the same stone with his sister in St. John's Cemetery.
The rest of the story: Bernard shares a headstone with his sister, Elizabeth. She was the housekeeper for the priests who served at St. John's. Elizabeth died in 1957 at the age of 86.

Note: St. John's Catholic Church was built in 1904, and the school opened in 1907.
