He attended school in Scotland. On February 18, 1934 he married Hulda Mueller in Columbus. Together they farmed in South Dakota until 1946 when they purchased a farm west of Columbus. Bill was a charter member of the Monroe Fire Board District and a member of Farm Bureau. He was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ and served in various capacities.
In 1970 he received the Platte County Soil & Water Conservation District Conservation Award and in 1994 he received the Columbus Area Senior Farmer Award. He enjoyed baseball, fishing, flowers, fruit trees, strawberry's, and raising gloxinia's.
