Nicholas Orth who passed away at an early hour this morning was one of the earliest pioneers of Sheboygan county and drove stage between Sheboygan, and Fond da Lac on the old plank road before the railroad was built. Not only this but he drove a stage to St. Mary and other points and his trips were over unbroken roads, coming in contact with windfalls but always with the stage right side up. The occupants were never alarmed when he held the lines and in those days the Indian invaded the forests and for miles not a white man was seen along the journey to Fond du Lac via the old plank road.
Later Mr. Orth conducted a grocery store the building still standing just across from Holy Name Church.
Mr. Orth was born in Germany December 8, 1822 and was 87 years of age at the time of his death.
He is survived by two daughters Mrs. C. Sauer with whom he had made his home for some time and Mrs. P. Zirwes both of this city.
The funeral will be held from the North Side Catholic church Thursday morning at 9 o'clock. Rev. Father Thill will have charge of the services. Interment will be at the North Side Catholic cemetery
