Elaine M. Kennedy was born in Le Mars, Iowa to Eugene and Lillian Kennedy on August 24, 1920. She had three brothers: Cecil Kennedy (Loretta), James Kennedy (Elaine), Eugene Kennedy (Dorothy), and two sisters, Helen Halaszyn (Stefan) and Mary Myers (Ralph).

Elaine married John Tolan, Sr. on December 27, 1951, and lived in Ralston, Nebraska. She is lovingly remembered by their three children: John Tolan, Jr. (Becky), Mary Treinen (Rick), and Mark Tolan, five grandchildren: John Treinen (Laura), Daniel Treinen (Annie), Kevin Treinen, Christopher Tolan and Sarah Tolan.

Elaine and John were founding members of St. Gerald Parish in Ralston, Nebraska. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker. Elaine was successful in her secretarial/bookkeeping careers throughout her life, working most notably in Washington, D.C. and General Electric in Omaha, Nebraska. Later in life, she worked at Ryan High School and Allen's Furniture. Elaine was a skilled employee and treasured friend to many.
