Katharina Elisabeth was born on 8 October 1891 in Nikolayevka (aka Schönthal), Taganrog-Yeisk Parish, Don Cossack Territory, Russian Empire to Volga Germans Nicolaus Gottwig and Catharina Margaretha Dörr, both of Walter, Atkarsk, Saratov, Russian Empire. Multiple families from Walter lived in Schönthal in late 1870s from early 1900s. By 1907, during the Stolypin reform, the family made their way to Siberia - village of Saratovka (in modern day in Rubtsovskiy rayon, Altai krai, Russia). She married Peter Nagel in a nearby village of Lokot' on 12 June 1911. Their marriage would be blessed by 13 children, 12 of them growing up and having families of their own. The young couple immigrated to United States in 1912, first settling in Colorado and then moving to California in 1920s. Katharina died in Fresno, CA on 26 December 1953 at the age of 62 years, 2 months and 18 days.
