James E. Miller July 25, 1946 - September 30, 2021
James "Jim" E. Miller, 75, of Mosiertown, died peacefully Thursday September 30, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was born in Cleveland Ohio on July 25, 1946, son of the late Francis and Rosemarie (Storm) Miller Conrad. He is survived by his devoted wife, the former Phyllis J. Crooks, whom he married July 5, 1980 in Meadville ; sisters Rosemary Hubach of Raleigh, NC and Marjorie Miller of New York City, NY; daughter Kim (Josh) Sherretts of Meadville; granddaughter Rosemarie Sherretts, who was the center of his world from the moment they met; as well as numerous step siblings, nieces and nephews. James was preceded in death by stepfather James E. Conrad; sister Betty Jane Kane; brothers Charles J. Miller and Thomas F. Miller, as well as stepbrother Paul (Chub) Conrad and sister in-law Laverne Conrad. James served his country through two tours of Vietnam as a Navy Seabee, part of Charlie Company, MCB 4. On his second tour in 1968 he was part of a 13 man crew that built the Liberty Bridge, the longest timber bridge to be constructed in Vietnam. Following his discharge, James worked many different jobs over the years. He worked for the Railroad, did construction and strip mining, worked in the Detroit auto industry, worked for Patterson's Candy and was a Meadville City Firefighter under Captain Ralph Butcher. He even owned his own septic tank business. He retired as a manager of the Linesville Wine and Spirits store, having worked for the state liquor stories for over twenty years. He was an avid fisherman and belonged to Crawford County Bass Masters Club and was a founding member of the French Creek Valley Bass Masters Club. He participated in many fishing tournaments and won second and first place consecutively in state wide tournaments in 1986 and '87. For many years he enjoyed a yearly fishing trip to Canada with a group of close friends. He also loved hunting and spent many hunting seasons enjoying the woods of the Kinzua Dam region. After his retirement, James found a new love of cooking and enjoyed reading recipes and experimenting with new flavors. He was known among friends and family for his delicious jams and jellies. In the last two years of his life he spent many hours enjoying his beautiful granddaughter Rosemarie. He loved reading to her and playing blocks. Her Pap was her best buddy. Friends and family will be received from 1-4 PM at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE, where Funeral Services will be held at 4 PM with Rev. Mark Fischer, Pastor of Twelve Apostles Lutheran Church, officiating. Military honors will follow. Masks are required for those in attendance. Internment will be at Greendale Cemetery in Meadville.
