Carrie Balasco is the daughter of Paolo Balasco and Dominica Campanucci. She was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania and lived in Altoona most of her life. She married Benedetto Merciai on the 25th of July 1909 and had these children with him: Julia Merciai Franco, Iola Merciai Gschwendtner, Amelia Merciai Eicher, Paul Louis Merciai, Emma Merciai Santopietro, Mary Merciai Pagliaroli and Josephine Merciai Hite. Benedetto died in 1930 leaving Carrie a widow at the age of 37.
When Carrie's daughter, Julia, died during childbirth in 1941, she stepped in and helped her son-in-law, Alexander Franco, raise their seven children.
Eventually, she moved to Youngstown, Ohio with her daughter Josephine Hite and lived there till she passed away in 1970.
