Fred Lucking, 99

Frederick (Fred) G Lucking, 99, of West Brighton died yesterday in Staten Island Hospital.
A lifelong Staten Island resident, Mr. Lucking was born in Fort Wadsworth. He moved to New Brighton in 1920 and to Stapleton in 1960. A year later, he moved into his daughter's West Brighton home.
Mr. Lucking founded Lucky's Ice Cream Shop on Jersey Street in New Brighton in 1912. The store closed when he joined the Army to fight in France during World War I. He received a Purple Heart during the war.
Lucky's reopened after the war and was a favorite hangout for dating couples in the 1920's and early 1930's. Mr. Lucking was forced to close the store in 1936 due to the Depression. He then became a civilian police officer at the Navy's Bayonne Supply Depot in 1940, retiring in 1957.
Mr. Lucking was a member of the Beacon Light Lodge of Mason's and the Veterans of World War I, Staten Island Barracks.
A member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Stapleton, he enjoyed gardening, baseball and playing cards.
His wife, the former Lillian Balzer, died in 1974.
The funeral will be 10:30 am Friday in the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton. Burial will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.
