John was born near Independence, IA, the son of Bernard Eckholt and Sophia Rath. John's family moved to Humphrey & he attended St Francis School. John and Rose settled in Humphrey, NE, after their marriage, just three blocks north of St. Francis Church. John opened the first Ford Auto agency in Humphrey, but later worked for Dober Motors of Humphrey. John's health began to fail, and he died on Saturday, December 5, 1942. His brother, Fr. Francis Solana Eckholt, O.F.M., celebrated the funeral Mass in St. Francis Church, Humphrey, and he was laid to rest in the Parish Cemetery. (Source: Dennis Bender, 4 Apr 2010)
