She appeared in a wide range of stage productions and television programs. She will perhaps be best remembered for her work in TV soap operas. After attending the Actors Studio, she made her Broadway debut in play "Sundown Beach" (1948) and followed this with "Detective Story" (1949 to 1950) and "Tovarich" (1963). She distinguished herself when she received a Drama Desk Award for "The American Clock" (1981). She will be remembered by television audiences for her role as 'Andrea Whiting' in the daytime serial "Search for Tomorrow" (1967 to 1972) and for her recurring role as 'Judge Rebecca Stein' in the series "Law & Order" (1991 to 2001).
