Lurla "Puzzle" Cost Harris, 84 of Huntsville, Alabama peacefully passed away at her home on January 4, 2022. Lurla was born near Birmingham, Alabama on August 28, 1937, and she resided in Birmingham until January 23, 1965, when she married the love of her life, John G. "Jack" Harris II, and moved to Huntsville. Lurla is best remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and trusted friend. She loved her family and friends beyond measure, and she was loved deeply in return. Lurla was a life-long cook and baker extraordinaire, an avid reader, a dedicated Alabama Football Fan, a lover of laughter and a story-teller like no other. From a young age, music gave her joy, especially singing and dancing. She loved to learn and demonstrated early on a unique, inquiring mind, so much so that when she was four years old, her father nicknamed her "Puzzle," an endearment that stayed with her for life. Before retirement, Lurla worked as an administrative assistant for several agencies involved in the defense of our country. Her life's calling, however, was loving her family and friends.
Lurla was preceded in death by her loving husband of 38 years, "Jack;" her cherished parents Margaret and Edgar Cost; and her beloved siblings Alice Crawford, Paul Cost, Willodean Freeman, Ed Cost, Larry Cost, as well as a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Left to cherish Lurla's memory are her daughter, Donna Harris (Michael Vaughn) of Huntsville, AL; son John G. Harris III (Mike Mizerak) of Atlanta, GA; grandson Jacob Harris Vaughn of Huntsville, AL; brother Ted Cost of Birmingham, AL; two Great Dane grand-dogs, Frances and Darlene, of Atlanta, GA; numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family, and friends, including two friends who were like sisters to her, Linda Allen and Gwen Kingery.
No visitation due to the pandemic and inclement weather. Graveside Services will be held at Valhalla Funeral Home and Memory Gardens at 2 pm on Saturday, January 8, 2022, officiated by Dr. Bobby Burt, Pastor. Memorial Donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the Huntsville/Madison County Public Library.
