Hulda will be lovingly remembered by her surviving daughter and daughter-in-law; 5 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and 3 great great-grandchildren; siblings, 1 sister and her husband, and 3 sister-in-laws.
Hulda was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Ersla Sommer (Cooper); husband, Norman "Sam" Gast; siblings, Alvin Sommer, Lavern Sommer, and Leona Krieg; Allan (Buck) Sommer; son, Dennis Strefling; and son-in-law Robert Hack.
Hulda was born on June 3, 1923, in Munger, Michigan, the daughter of Albert and Ersla. Hulda was a graduate of Bay City Central High School in 1941. She was a nursing graduate from Mercy School of Nursing in Bay City, Michigan, and served in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps. She later received her bachelor's degree in secondary education from Central Michigan University. After which, Hulda practiced in several areas of nursing before spending the remainder of her profession as the Director of Nursing at Bay City Osteopathic Hospital.
Hulda was a devout Christian and active life-long member of the First Baptist Church in Essexville, Michigan, where she sang in the choir, taught bible classes, and had passion for sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. She loved to volunteer, especially to the elderly in nursing homes. She enjoyed the art of tatting, painting China, genealogy, and playing the accordion, steel guitar, organ, and harmonica. She was a gracious host and always had her home open to friends and family. She was a member of the Bay County Genealogy Society. She loved to travel the world and her most cherished trip was to the Holy Land. For many years she lived her winters in Texas, and her summers at Bay Park in Wisner, Michigan. No matter where Hulda traveled, she touched those she encountered with her heart and the word of God.
The family would like to extend a heart-felt appreciation to all those who lovingly cared for Hulda at Symphony Tri-Cities and from American's Hospice of Saginaw
