Peter Turbes, the last of Springfield's Civil War Veterans, and a highly respected resident of that community, answered final roll call, early Friday morning at 5:15 O'Clock, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Anton Kotten, in that city, where he had been making his home. Death was due to complications incident to advanced age. Mr. Turbes, had been in falling health, for sometime, and was confined to bed, about a month.Deceased was past 87 years of age, have been being born, January 1, 1848, in Manderfeld, Prussia, Germany.
When a boy of nine years, he emigrated to the United States with his parents, who spent a short time in Mankato, before moving to New Ulm. He worked in the community until enlisting at the age of 16 years in CO.L First Minnesota Mounted Rangers, which was assigned to patrol duty, guarding the frontier from Fort Ridgely to Fairmont, against anticipated attacks from the Sioux Indians. A year later, Mr. Turbes enlisted in CO.A 11th Minnesota Infantry, serving until the close of the Civil War.Upon being honorably discharged form from the military service.
