He is a first generation German immigrant. He spent much of his childhood in Clinton, De Witt County, Texas. He married Pauline Pohle on September 28, 1874 in Harris County, Texas. They are the parents of the following known children:

Ernest August Fox (1878-1938)
Ruby Fuchs (1880-?) died young
Emma Agnes Fox Winkel (1881-1966)
Anna Friede Fuchs Heinze (1883-1900)
Charles William Fox (1885-1951)
Herman Emil Fox (1887-1966)
Henry John Fox Sr. (1889-1966)
Cornelius Albert Fox (1891-1961)
Esther Catherine Fox Scholl (1894-1972)
Edward Herbert Albert Fox (1895-1951)

He worked as a railroad clerk and later as a drayman, which is someone who delivers and transports goods (todays truck driver). From 1912 until 1915, he returned to Germany to live. Most of his children changed their last name to Fox. Prior to 1911 he began using that spelling as well. He is thought to be buried in the Magnolia Cemetery in Houston, Texas, next to his wife. However, no actual grave marker has been found, and his actual gravesite is not known.
