Hazel Marie (Winters) Anderson was born on Wednesday; August 2, 1911 in Yadkinville; Yadkin County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of: Miles F. and Lula [Reece] Winters. The family moved to Iowa and lived near New Providence. She graduated from the New Providence Community School and received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls; Hardin County, Iowa. She began teaching in area rural schools and then the Iowa Falls Schools at West Side Elementary. On Thursday (Thanksgiving Day); November 27, 1947 she was united in marriage to Merlin A. Anderson at the Bethany Lutheran Parsonage, Iowa Falls, Iowa. To this union one daughter was born: Kathi. Hazel returned to teaching in 1958 in the Alden Schools, completed her bachelors degree, and retired in 1976, teaching a total of 37 years. She continued her "teaching" with her grandchildren when she visited them in Cedar Rapids; Linn County, Iowa and Kansas and during their annual week-long visits to Iowa Falls, Iowa in the summer. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls, Iowa and the Retired Teachers. Hazel Marie (Winters) Anderson, age 96, of Iowa Falls, Iowa, passed away Thursday, January 3, 2007, at Scenic Manor Care Facility, Iowa Falls. Those left to mourn her passing are: Her daughter: Kathi [Mark] Oppold of Overland Park; Johnson County, Kansas. Her three grandchildren: Tricia [Byron] Vogel of Olathe; Johnson County Kansas. Stephen [Kelly] Oppold of Olathe, Kansas and Michael Oppold of Overland Park, Kansas. Her five great grandchildren: Kyle John and Adam Lawrence Vogel, Colby Anthony, Makenna Christine and Caeden Anderson Oppold, all of Olathe, Kansas. Her three sisters: Norma Krueger of Iowa City; Johnson County, Iowa. Jeannette Payne of Waterloo; Black Hawk County, Iowa and Kay Wood of Grand Junction; Mesa County, Colorado and four brothers: Stan [Inez] Winter of Iowa Falls, Iowa, Lawrence [Lena Mae] Winters of Hampton; Franklin County, Iowa. Millard Winters of Stratford; Hamilton County, Iowa and Don [Caroline] Winters of Granger; Dallas County, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband: Merlin Anderson. Her one sister: Ferne Winters, and six brothers, Wallace (infancy), Floyd, Kenny, Merle, Willard, and Lester Winters. May they rest in peace. Visitation will be from: 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on January 6, 2008. Funeral services for Hazel M. Anderson will begin at: 10:30 a.m. on Monday; January 7, 2008 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls with Pastor Kenneth Krueger officiating.
