Marion McNeely Smith, 92, of the Randolph Manor, formerly of Cemetery Hill Road, Randolph and Port Charlotte, FL., passed away on Tuesday, May, 24, 2022 while under the care of Hospice.

Marion was born in Oneonta, NY, the daughter of James Holley McNeely and Edith Wheeler McNeely. She often shared memories of how her mother's family emigrated from England to work on the railroad in Oneonta, which was the site of the largest roundhouse in the world during that golden era. When Marion was a senior in high school, she moved with her parents and sister, Dolores, to Morris, NY, after her father re-turned home from serving in the Army.

Upon graduating from high school in 1947, Marion attended Hartwick College in Oneonta, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Nursing. While Marion was completing her nursing training in New York City, she was introduced to her future husband and love of her life, Erle A. Smith, Jr. Marion and Erle were married on November 22, 1951 at Zion Episcopal Church in Morris, NY.

Marion was a devoted wife and mother. During her early career, she worked as a nurse in New York City and as a school nurse in the Cherry Valley Central School system. Marion was active as a volunteer nurse while she, Erle, and their three young daughters resided in Margaretville, NY. She later returned to school and earned a master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY. Marion worked for many years in the Otsego County and Cattaraugus County School Systems as a Speech Pathologist, until her retirement in 1985.

During their retirement years, Marion and Erle en-joyed spending their summer months in Randolph, NY and winter months in Port Charlotte, FL, where Marion served as a volunteer at the Charlotte County Environmental Center. She was an avid reader who also enjoyed hiking, cross-country skiing, gardening, and listening to big band era music. Marion earned her Amateur Extra Class Ham radio license during a time when few women achieved this top US license class, and she served as a Navy Mars Net Controller for many years.

Marion was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, and her husband, Erle. She is survived by her three daughters, Cindy Smith of Oneida Castle, NY; Wendy Smith (husband Robert Schilling) of Lecanto, FL; and Laura Buttram (husband Douglas) of Youngsville, NC; two cousins, six nieces and nephews, four grandchildren, and one great grand-daughter.

Marion's family will hold a private memorial service at a later date. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Randolph Manor and staff for the loving care given to our mother during the five years while placed in their care.

Arrangements are under the care of the Van Rensselaer & Son Funeral Home, 14 Church Street, Ran-dolph, New York. To send a condolence log onto www.vanrensselaerandson funeralhome.com
