Long time mountain resident Allene McClelland passed away peacefully, at her home in Lake Arrowhead, California, on August 29th, of natural causes. She was 95 years old.
Allene was the only child of Ward and Martha Gates. She was born and raised in Mar Vista, California. After she graduated from Venice High School, Allene continued on with her golfing career that had begun as a pre-teen. She had been recognized by Ripley's Believe it or Not, as the youngest to hit a hole-in-one at age 10. She won her first championship at the age of 11, at the Fox Hills Country Club.
Her father, an amateur golfer, made sure that Allene remained focused on perfecting her golf skills. Her attention and determination were rewarded with 20 club championships, an additional five hole-in-one credits and wining the Womens California State Amateur Championship.
When she was 22, Allene married Johnny Weissmueller who earned fame as a five time gold medal Olympic swimmer and star of 12 Tarzan movies. They were together from 1948 to 1962. During their 14 year marriage, they traveled the world and socialized with professional athletes, movie stars and heads of state.
Allene married her second husband, Mac McClelland in the mid 1960's. They moved up to the mountains and purchased a home in the Country Club Arrowhead Villas complex in 1967. They quickly became members of Lake Arrowhead Country Club and very involved in the golfing and club activities there.
Later in life, after Mac passed away, Allene met fellow LACC member Fred Shleinkofer. He was an avid golfer and became a close companion until his death in 2013.
In 2002, Allene was honored with a LACC lifetime achievement award and was still a member of the club, at the time of her death.
Allene had no children of her own but has been like a mother and grandmother to so many who've loved her. One of her favorite things to do was to go out to the restaurants and if you ever saw her out you knew you'd witnessed a class act. That woman had style. Her good friend, helper and caregiver Efrain Alvarez used the word "elegant" to describe her. He also added that she was a tough cookie, referring to all that she had come back from in her life; physically and emotionally. Efrain and his wife Juana were there for her, providing her with tender loving care until her last day.
Allene leaves behind many friends and family who will miss her – but at her request there will be no formal services. So instead just raise a glass where you are and offer a toast in her name. She'd have liked that.
