Time goes on and on and each day, one by one we slip away.

Mrs. Alger had a poem she very much liked.

"When I go home" A little while and then the summer day----
"When I go home" Beyond the gloom of more and for I see
The welcome warm of thos who wait for me
Work ceases not in sunshine or in shower.
"Till I go Home."
And when the night wind moans across the wood
I feel no dread of dark nor chill of cold.
All will be well and happiness.
"When I go home."
There will be light at even tide for me.
The light that never was on land or sea.
"When I go Home."

CHARLES H. ALGER SUMMONED BY DEATH

Well Known Rushville Resident Expired Friday Night After A Long Illness

WAS A PIONEER IN MILLING BUSINESS

Charles H. Alger, age 78, a prominent resident of this city, died Friday night at ten o'clock at his home, 425 North Perkins street. Death came following a seven months' illness with a complication of diseases.

The deceased was one of the pioneers of Rush county. He was born here Feb. 18, 1850, and spent practically his entire life here. For several years he owned and operated one of the first flour mills in the county, being in business with Hugh Gray. He is also an extensive land owner, owning a large farm northwest of this city, and has been prominently identified with the Methodist church here for many years. He was the son of Cyrus Alger and Mary Ann Griffin Alger. He was married to Terrissa L. Williams, who preceded him in death several years ago. No children were born to them. The only members of the immediate family are surviving are a neice, Mrs. J. M. Depweg and a sister, Mrs. L. H. Doughty, of Indianapolis.

Funeral services have been arranged for two o'clock Monday afternoon at the Methodist church, with the Rev. E. L. Hutchens in charge. Interment will be made in East Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the house until the hour for the services.

OBJECTION IS MADE TO WILL BEING OPENED

Mrs. May Doughty, Sister of C. H. Alger, Attempts to Prevent $100,000 Estate From Being Probated

ALLEGES DECEASED WAS UNDULY INFLUENCED

By Terms of Will, More Than Score of Beneficiaries are Named in Many Places

The will of the late Charles H. Alger, involving an estate valued at $100,000, was placed in the hands of the Rush circuit court for probate along with two codicils to the original document. At the same time, through attorneys, Mrs. May Doughty of Indianapolis, a sister of Mr. Alger, filed suit to prevent the probate of the document.

The statutory charges of undue influence, undue execution and unsoundness of mind were alleged in the complaint. Mrs. Doughty and her daughter, Mrs. Maud Doughty Depweg, were bequeathed $500 annually for ten years from the estate. Much of the property was divided in special bequests to various missionary societies, and church organizations of the Methodist creed.

Mr. Alger, during his lifetime, was interested in churches and their work. His bequests while living, were large. His estate is composed of about $25,000 in personal property, 496 acres of farm lands in Rushville and Jackson townships, worth about $125 an acre, and his Rushville residence in Perkins street worth about $6,000.

The will was a lengthy one. It was made May 20, 1925. The first codicil was recorded March 23, 1927 and the second codicil August 8, 1928. Changes in the original document were made in these codicils. The signature of Mr. Alger was witnessed in each case by A. L. Gary and Anna Bohannon who wrote the will.

The terms of the original document follow:

Sarah J. Williams, a sister-in-law, for her care and attention was given Mr. Alger's Perkins street residence, all household goods and free use of gas under agreement for a well on a farm owned by Mr. Alger.

Emma Scott, Sarah J. Williams and Elisha Williams, sisters and brother of the deceased wife of Mr. Alger, were given a fourth value in all lands owned by deceased in Jackson and Rushville townships. It was requested that the legatees take the bequest in land and the remainder sold by the executor. If the three legatees desired cash instead, all lands were to be sold and one fourth the cash value be divided equally by the three.

Nan Hatton, Fannie Mellinder, George Mellinder and William Mellinder, were each given $250 bequests. Susan Broughers was to be given $150 as $100 had already been advanced to this heir.

In special bequests Taylor University at Upland, Ind., was to receive $2,000; the M. E. Hospital at Indianapolis and the Deaconess Home, were to get $2,000; God's Bible School at Cincinnati was given $2,000; the Oriental Missionary Society of Tokyo, Japan, was given $2,000; E. R. Monroe of the British Post Office at Canton, China, was given $1,000; Fred T. Fuege, superintendent of the International Holiness Union at Natal, South Africa, #1,000; the Preachers Aid Society of the Indiana Conference, M. E. Church, $1,000; the Veterans Home Society, Indiana conference, M. E. Church $1,000; Board of Foreign Missions, M. E. Church, $1,000; Board of Home Missions, M. E. church, $1,000; St. Paul's M. E. Church of Rushville, $500, only $100 of which shall be used annually for current expenses, and owned the Bible or fostered dischurch, the windows not to be constructed during the lifetime of the donor; to the Women's Council of Rushville $500; to May Doughty and daughter Maude Doughty Depweg $500 annually for ten years, one half this sum going to each beneficiary and on the death of one, the survivor to receive the entire sum. A trust of $5,000 was to be created to take care of this item, the interest to go to the St. Paul M. E. church minus the expense incurred by the trust.

The residue of the estate was to be held in trust by Elisha Williams and Sarah J. Williams, to be distributed to worthy charitable organizations or individuals, no dollar of which could be given to any college, university, seminary or school that taught the destruction of the faith of our Fathers and disowned the Bible or fostered disbelief. Elisha Williams and Sarah Williams were named executor's of the will.

The first codicil to the original will revoked the bequest of $2,000 to the Methodist Hospital and the Deaconess Home of Indianapolis, as Mr. Alger expressed himself not in sympathy with the business basis of the hospital and its failure to live up to the method of Methodism.

The second item revoked $1,000 bequest to Fred T. Feuge, superintendent of the International Holiness Union, and the third item revoked the $1,000 bequest to the St. Paul M. E. church of this city for new windows. It was the understanding of the donor that a sum sufficient for the windows had already been raised.

The fourth item gave $1,000 to the Glenwood M. E. church to help pay off its indebtedness providing the church raised the remainder of the total amount within one year. Should the debt be cancelled in Mr. Alger's lifetime, the bequest was revoked and if the church failed to raise the stipulated balance, in the required time, the gift was removed in that case.

The fifth item of the first codicil changed the bequest to Mr. Alger's sister, Mr. May Doughty and her daughter, in that the interest on the $5,000 trust fund after the $500 had been paid annually for ten years, should go to these two heirs after trust costs had been paid.

The second codicil, made August 8 of this year, stated that the Glenwood church whose $1,000 bequest was mentioned in the first codicil, was to be given three years instead of one year to raise the balance of its indebtedness.

The bequest of $20 to George Mellender was revoked in view of the fact that the recipient of the gift was dead. The $2,000 bequest to Taylor university was changed to $1,000 in the light of the gifts made since the original will.

The gift to God's Bible School at Cincinnati was changed from $2,000 to $1,000, a gift of $1,000 having been made to this organization before he died. E. R. Monroe, of the British Post Office at Canton, China, was given $1,000 in the original will and this bequest was revoked in the second codicil in view of the fact that the heir had preceded Mr. Alger in death.

The protest filed by Mr. Alger's sister against probating the will will doubtless throw the estate in the courts for considerable litigation.

Rushville Republican, 12 Mar 1932
The announcement in Tuesday's paper of the death of Lucious H. Doughty at Indianapolis, recalls a familiar figure of the long ago. Those who were acquainted with Lou, knew him as a quiet, gentlemanly, good natured fellow, who merry "gibes" did often set the house in a roar. He was married to Lilly May Alger on March 15, 1877 and for years lived on a farm just east of Gings. Coming to Rushville later, he engaged in the occupation of painting and paper hanging, at which he was an expert. His comedies about "our Jack at Paree" and Rushville not on the map' never failed to bring an encore, when "convivial hours and the flowing bowl went around." A fine bass singer, he was much in demand in church and festival work.

An honest man, a devoted husband and father, he lived the terror of his way, without guile or deception and will be missed and mourned by the many who were fortunate in life to have been his friend. May he rest in peace and his family be comforted by the reflection that he never wronged man or woman and whatever his faults he was faultless to others.

PINK AND BLUE SHOWER
The country home of Mrs. Malcolm Lawson, south of Carmel, was a place of gayety and surprises when Mrs. William Lawson was honored with a stork shower. Appropriate music by Vaughn Monroe (pink for a girl and blue for a boy (was played softly as friends and relatives gathered with lovely gifts. The white brick fireplace was an attractive background for the tony white bassinette, draped with pink skinner's satin ruffled skirt, in which the gifts were placed and later opened by William and Mrs. William Lawson. Among the treasured gifts were a pink satin coat, a reproduction of William Lawson's baby coat, tailored and presented by his mother, also a yellow gold diamond ring presented by the oldest couple present, Mr. and Mrs. John Depweg of Home Place. Mrs. George Fridle presented his daughter with a baby bunting set as a farewell gift as the Fridles sold their beautiful colonial country home south of Carmel and were to leave Dec. 3 for Los Angeles for the winter and spring. Many good wishes were extended them.

Games were played and those winning prizes were Mrs. Vaughn Overstreet, Mrs. Lawrence Gordon, Mrs. Lowie Wright, Mrs. Sherrill Bowman and Sarah Jane Young.

Other guests in addition to the ones mentioned were Mesdames Woodie Setters, Robert Fisher, Anderson, Ollie Boardman, Indianapolis, William Wyatt, Paul Fisher and Miss Kraft of Indianapolis. Those sending gifts but unable to attend were Mrs. Ina Gray of Bowling Green, Ky., Mrs. Ida Lawson, Mrs. Evelyn Wright, Indianapolis, Mrs. Walter Friar and daughter, Irene, all of Indianapolis, Mrs. Armin Rice and son of San Francisco, and Mrs. Cecil Butts of Westfield.

Dainty refreshments were served by the hostess assisted by Mr. Ollie Boardman.

The men guests were entertained by Vaughn Overstreet and were Malcolm Lawson, William Lawson, Lawrence Gordon, Woodie Setters, John Depweg, Robert Fisher and Vaughn Overstreet Jr.

She is survived by two children Mrs. L. H. Doughty and Charles H. Alger and one grand-daughter, Mrs. John M. Depweg.
