Obituary:

Samuel E. Nichols, Jr. was born on November 27, 1928 in Robbins, Illinois to the proud parents of Samuel E. Nichols and Lishia Mae Nichols (nee Parks).

Samuel moved to Chicago around 1940. In his twenties, he was invited to Shiloh Seventh-Day Adventist Church with some friends. It is during one of his visits to the church that he met and began a friendship that later blossomed into a courtship with his soon to be bride, Velma Price. The two later joined into Holy Matrimony at the church where they met on April 10, 1954. The Lord later blessed their union with two sons, Samuel III and Franz. Their friendship and loving marriage of 67 years was filled with wonderful, special memories with family and friends.

Samuel came to know and love God and decided to devote his life to Him and became a member of Shiloh Seventh-Day Adventist Church. After joining Shiloh Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Samuel was active in the church and became a sabbath school. teacher and deacon. He held the position of deacon for over 50 years.

At the early age of 9 years old, Samuel began working on a vegetable wagon. At the end of each day, he would receive his wages of a quarter and all the vegetables he could carry home to his mother. As a young man, he started to enjoy drawing and art. Samuel attended Dunbar High School which awarded him a full scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago. After realizing that the family was growing and more finances were needed, he decided to go to work at Standard Oil in Whiting, Indiana. After leaving Standard Oil, Samuel went on to work for the United States Postal Service as an art illustrator. Samuel retired from the Postal Service after 44 years of service. During these years while working to care for his family, he also attended Olive Harvey College where he received an Associate degree in Art.

Samuel passed along his love, passion, and ability for the arts to his granddaughter, Kaitlin. Like her grandfather, Kaitlin is also pursuing a degree in the Arts.

Being a loving, devoted, kind and dependable husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law and uncle, Samuel always made time for his family and friends. He was a family man who enjoyed music, painting, reading, long scenic drives, daily worship, and astronomy. He also loved A&W root beer. Samuel's past-times included his love of painting and sign making. He did many paintings for his church and the United States Post Office. He received many awards and other accolades for his paintings from the Post Office. Samuel was also known for his beautiful portraits of family and friends.

Samuel was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel E. Nichols and Lishia Mae Nichols (nee Parks); two brothers, Frank and Tom Nichols; and his three half-sisters, Ruth Jackson, Olga Nauden and Thelma Mitchell.
