Anthropologist, Linguist, and Native American/First Nations Leader. Freda Irene Ahenakew was a leader in Indigenous language preservation in Canada. Many consider her one of the most important people in mobilizing speakers of Indigenous languages to save those languages across North America. She taught others how to speak the Cree language and for four years, was the director of the Saskatchewan Indian Languages Institute. Ahenakew went on to become a professor in Native Studies at the University of Manitoba. She was awarded both the Order of Canada and the Saskatchewan Order of Merit. A public library in Saskatoon was named in her honor.
