Son of Henry & Anna Margaret (Debus) Schaffer.
WW II - US Marine Corps.
In 1945, he returned to Lincoln to attend the University of Nebraska. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Journalism. During his tenure at the University, he worked on the sports desk at the Lincoln Journal & also did publicity work for the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission. Upon graduation, he joined the public relations staff of Ohio Oil Company & later moved to become Associate Editor of Outdoor Life Magazine. Within four years, he was invited by the Then-Director, Mel Steen of the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission, to come back to Nebraska & become Chief of Information & Tourism & Editor of Nebraskaland Magazine, which he accepted. At that time the magazine, known as Outdoor Nebraska, was a small publication, but under his direction & with an extremely talented staff, Nebraskaland Magazine won top honors as being the Number One publication among all state outdoor publications in the nation by the American Association for Conservation Information where it remains today. With these achievements, he was named President of this organization in 1971. He also conducted a weekly radio program, Outdoor Nebraska, which was aired on most radio stations in Nebraska. He ended every program by saying, "Here's wishing each of you good fishing, good hunting, and good health." As Chief of Tourism and faced with a low tourism budget from 1960 through 1971, he not only asked fellow Nebraskans to help promote the state, but also to pay their own way. The response to Dick Schaffer's request was tremendous. As a result, over 200 persons in tourism related businesses became NEBRASKAlanders. They operated tourism centers in conjunction with their businesses. The NEBRASKAlander program won the state the highest award by the National Association of Travel Organizations & he was named Travel Director of the Year. One of his fondest achievements was his "brain child" NEBRASKAland Days. He believed that even without a state budget for such an event, it could be done & for months he literally dreamed about it. Again with a very talented staff & the support of Nebraskans, it was developed & today remains one of the top tourism attractions in Nebraska in North Platte. In 1972, he resigned from the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission to develop his own advertising & promotion agency from which he retired in 2001. Dick loved gardening & so enjoyed the fruits of his labors. Every flower & every plant was a gift. He & wife, Rosie, have maintained the same seats for 46 years to watch the Huskers play football. He only missed three home games during this time.
