George Carl Werner was born October 13, 1944, in York Township in Iowa County in the home in which he spent his entire life. He was the son of John T. And Olga (Heitshusen) Werner. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1962. He joined the National Guard in 1963, serving for three years before being honorably discharged. George was united in marriage to Marlene Cross on June 15, 1968, in Sumner Iowa. To this union they were blessed with two children. He was a lifelong farmer raising cattle and hogs while also growing corn and beans. While farming full-time he also worked for Amana Refrigeration in the purchasing department for 32 years, and then Hummer Trucking before retiring in 2008. George enjoyed fishing, golfing, playing cards, and traveling. George and Marlene visited Europe, Alaska, California, and in retirement spent time with friends and family in Arizona and Florida. His true passion in life was being with his friends, family and grandchildren whom he adored greatly. He was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. George passed away peacefully Sunday September 4, 2022 at home surrounded by his loving family at the age of 77.


He is survived by his wife of 54 years, two children , seven grandchildren; a brother; a sister.


He was preceded in death by his parents John T. and Olga Werner; a brother John F. Werner and a sister, Marilyn (Earl) Wichmann.


A celebration of life service will be 10:30 am Friday September 9, 2022 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Williamsburg. Burial will be at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. A visitation will be from 3-7 pm Thursday at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg.
