Deacon Edmund Rice (1594-1663, FAG29453093), wife Thomasine Frost, and 7 of their children settled in Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1639. Edmund's granddaughter, Mary Rice (1619-1710, FAG52187450) and husband Thomas Axtell (1619-1646, FAG52187346) came to Sudbury in October 1643 and purchased 5 acres of land from Edmund. Thomas and Mary had two young children at the time, and another was born in Sudbury. Soon after the untimely death of Thomas at age 26, Mary wed John Maynard, a neighbor who was a widower with a young son. Mary and John had four more children in Sudbury: Zachariah (b.1647), Lydia (b.1648), Elizabeth (b.1649), and MARY MAYNARD (b.1656).
On 21JUL1674, in Sudbury, Mary Maynard married Daniel Hudson (1651-1731, FAG 22856858). Attached is a copy of that marriage record. After moving to Lancaster, MA., Mary died six months after giving birth on 15APR1677 to their only son, Daniel.
Almost 20 years later, on the morning of 11SEP1697, Hannah Prescott Rugg (FAG75890665) left the protection of Thomas Sawyer's garrison in Lancaster for a day at the old Rugg home place with her young grandsons, Nathaniel and Seth (sons of her daughter Rebecca Rudd and Nathaniel Hudson, FAG148390618, the youngest brother of Daniel). She was joined by her son Joseph Rugg (1668-1697, FAG187943293), his wife Mary Prescott Rugg and their infant son. They were all victims of an Indian raid that day- kidnapped and/or killed and their home burned to the ground. Other victims of the raid were Daniel's mother Johanna and his sisters Elizabeth and Johanna. Mary Maynard Hudson's son Daniel (1677-1750, FAG22856883) lived on to be known as a "survivor of the Great Swamp Fight in King Philip's War, and a Lieutenant in the Massachusetts Militia".
