Raised in a Catholic orphanage in Germany, he migrated to the U.S. when he was 16 years old, and sold strawberries on the streets of Washington, D.C., later establishing his own produce business. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Ruth S. Bode who died in 1999. Survivors include his son, Joseph Bode, Jensen Beach, FL; daughter-in-law, Amy Bode; granddaughter, Jennifer Fink, Enumclaw, WA; grandsons, Jordan Bode, Renton, WA & Joseph Michael Bode, Jensen Beach; great-granddaughters, Brianne Fink & Kiersten Find, Enumclaw. Graveside services conducted, Tuesday, August 29, 2006.
Herman J. Bode, 97, died August 22, 2006 at Treasure Coast Hospice in Stuart. He was born in Oldenburg, Germany and lived in Jensen Beach for the last 27 years. Herman was orphaned at 3 and raised at a Catholic orphanage in Germany, at 16 he made his way to the United States and although he spoke no English he learned the language, worked for relatives and had various other jobs including briefly working on the Hoover dam.

He met his wife of 66 years and then started his own produce business in Washington, D.C. He started by walking the streets of NW Washington selling strawberries, after much success he bought a truck and had a complete line of fresh produce, at his retirement his customers included famous local bakeries and the Sororities and Fraternities at the University of Maryland. He was the last remaining Huckster on the streets of Washington, after 5 decades he retired in 1974.

He served honorably in the Army Engineers in World War II and spent 3 years overseas.

Herman loved to fish for snook in local waters and well into his eighties he had a booth at the Stuart B & A Flea Market. He had a smile for everyone and was never heard to have said a bad word about anyone.

He was preceded by his wife of 66 years Ruth S. Bode 6 years ago to the day.

He was survived by his son Joseph Bode of Jensen Beach, his daughter-in-law Amy Bode, his granddaughter Jennifer Fink of Enumclaw, WA, two grandsons Jordan Bode of Renton, WA and Joseph Michael Bode of Jensen Beach, and two great-granddaughters, Brianne Fink and Kiersten Fink of Enumclaw, WA.

SERVICES: Visitation will be August 26, 2006 at 2 PM - 4 PM at All County Funeral Home in Stuart.
