Claire Brinkman Marcus passed gently on Sunday, October 23, 2022. She was 106 years old. Claire was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Leonard (Mac) Marcus, her son Richard, daughter Mary Ellen and grandson Alex Marra. Claire is survived by her sister, Connie Mitchell; children Stephanie Marra, and Paul (Lisa) Marcus; five grandchildren: Genevieve Marcus (Louie Newmyer), Jesseca Parker, Anthony, Nicholas (Ciara), and Michael (Brittney) Marra; 16 great grandchildren, Jameson, Kenzie, Marra, Daisy, and Streeter Parker, Joey, Max, Sasha, and Maverick Marra, Leah, Dominic, and Sean Marra and Cameron Harp, Mac, Nico, and Duke Marra, many friends and her cat Spotswood who never left her side.
Claire was born to Mr. and Mrs. Oscar and Isabel Brinkman, July 31, 1916, in Washington D.C. In 1918, at two years old, Claire survived the worldwide flu pandemic. Claire's childhood nickname was "Chubb." Claire loved to read. She graduated from high school early at age 15, then did nothing but read for several years. Her first trip to Europe was in 1937. She traveled alone, by ship, visiting London and Paris and all her favorite places she'd read about in novels. During WWII, Claire worked as a nurse's assistant at Georgetown Hospital.
Claire paid $15 a month to attend law school. She attended Columbus School of Law, part of the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. In 1941, Claire passed the Washington D.C. bar, but it would be years before Claire put her law degree to use.
Claire met her husband Mac at the Wisconsin State Dance, in Washington D.C. She knew within one week that she wanted to marry him. They wed in 1946. Of Mac, Claire said, "He was the best thing that ever happened to me." She spoke often of his humility and kindness. In 1960, when Mac's health began to fail, Claire went to work at the Federal Trade Commission. She began as a stenographer until her employers realized she was a licensed attorney. She then worked as an attorney at the Consumer Product Safety Commission until retiring in 1987. She loved life and began ballroom dance classes in her 80's and ballet classes when she was 94 years old.
Claire always had a heart for looking after the vulnerable, especially animals. She was a friend and companion to countless dogs and cats over her lifetime. She went out of her way to help others in need. She had a talent for helping people feel better, and more handsome or beautiful after a visit with her. She had a feisty, clever sense of humor and was famous for doling out bizarre compliments. Even at an advanced age, Claire's wit and comedic timing remained intact. Claire loved her large family, appreciated their kind attention to her needs as she aged, and enjoyed their energy and humor.
