Janie Yates-Glandorf (born Janie Lataine Bartlett), age 83, died on August 27, 2012, following a long illness. Memorial services will be held at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service on Thursday, August 30, 2012, at 4:30 pm, followed by a reception. Private graveside services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to the Janie Yates Memorial Drama Scholarship Fund at City High School, 1900 Morningside Drive, Iowa City, IA 52245,; attn.: Doug Lestina. Online condolences may be sent for Janie's family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com Janie was born August 12, 1929, in Goldsboro, NC, to Luther and Janie Jackson Bartlett. She was raised by Bertha Hill and James R. Bartlett. She graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1947 and from High Point College in 1951. She earned a Master's Degree in Theatre from the University of North Carolina in 1963. Her PhD in English and Theatre Education was awarded in 1978. Janie married Rodney T. Yates of Concord, NC, in 1951, and they were divorced in 1977. She married Gilbert Glandorf of Williamsburg, IA, in 1978. Janie taught English and Theatre for ten years in North Carolina, and taught those same subjects at City High School in Iowa City for twenty-five years. In addition to her theatre work at City, Janie organized several performance companies, including Crosstown Players, T.J. Theatre, SSRO at the Senior Center, and Chamber Theatre Readers. After her retirement from City High in 1991, she also volunteered at Mercy Hospital, the Senior Center, and the ICCSD. "Doc" Yates was an inductee in the City High Hall of Fame, and was named "Educator of the Year" in 1991. She was an inaugural inductee in the State of Iowa Thespian Directors' Hall of Fame. She is in Who's Who in Entertainment, and much of her written work is collected in the Iowa Women's Archives at the U. of I. Library. She has had numerous articles published in educational and theatre journals, as well as Shakespeare companion texts published by Perfection Learning Company. Janie is survived by her husband, Gilbert Glandorf;l one son and one daughter. She has four-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
